Art Lovers: Assist Remotely at Smithsonian Associates' Art Making Courses

Smithsonian Associates Remote Studio Arts Representative

Smithsonian Studio Arts has offered remote Studio Arts classes since 2020. Courses cover a range of subjects, including drawing, painting, fiber arts, photography, digital media, sculpture, jewelry, calligraphy, and more.Our Studio Arts classes are easily accessed online via Zoom. We offer over 300 classes and workshops per year and pride ourselves on the quality of instruction fostered within our intimate classroom settings. All courses and workshops are taught by professional artists and experienced teachers, with a focus on both skill-building and creative exploration. We have over 30 active instructors from around the country, as well as special guests and visiting artists.

OVERVIEW:

Remotevolunteers are expected to represent Smithsonian Associates during the duration of the class. Duties include taking attendance, managing the Zoom waiting room, posting and maintaining the chat box, spotlighting and providing assistance to students. Volunteers will not be teaching or assisting to teach the class.

REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Basic computer and Zoom skills. A functioning laptop or PC (position can not be performed on a tablet or phone)

Volunteers must be attentive, self motivated, communicative, and prompt.

SCHEDULING REQUIREMENTS:

The time commitment is minimum once a week for up to 8 weeksat a time. Classes are available weekdays, weeknights and weekends. No expertise in art is required - volunteering is a perfect opportunity to learn by observing the classes and dabbling off to the side. Please note: volunteers will not have the same experience as paying students.

TRAINING:

Volunteers will be required to complete a live, virtual 2-hour orientation and complete at least one shadow shift. Mandatory refresher trainings to be completed once a year.


RECRUITMENT TIMELINE:

Applications close on July 31st with interviews taking place in early August. Training will take place in late August and the first classes will begin in early October.
